What is CAN Cancer?

Community Assistance for Neighbors with Cancer (CAN Cancer) is a program providing community assistance to help cover non-medical expenses for Harney County residents fighting all forms of cancer.

CAN Cancer was established by the Martinez family of Wilderness Garbage in cooperation with the Central Oregon Haulers, Bend Garbage & Recycling, Cascade Disposal, High Country Disposal, Prineville Disposal, and Madras Sanitary Services.

The program was first introduced in Central Oregon in 2009. In 2011, Lincoln County Haulers developed a CAN Cancer program in their community. In 2012, Harney District Hospital (HDH) and C&B Sanitary Services teamed up and brought CAN Cancer to Harney County.

The goal of CAN Cancer here in Harney County is to help provide emotional and financial support for patients and their families, through regular support group meetings and assistance with transportation and lodging costs. Support group meetings are currently on hold due to COVID-19 and will resume as soon as guidance changes.

If you have a cancer diagnosis, live in Harney County and are planning to or currently receiving treatment, you are eligible for the program.

Funds are raised by local community donations at events and through campaigns and promotions. Our two biggest events are the Tea Party Fundraiser in February and Trail of Hope, a 5K run/walk held every May. One hundred percent of all contributions are deposited into the CAN Cancer fund administered through HDH. One hundred percent of donations stay local and benefit Harney County families.

To get in touch with CAN Cancer, contact program coordinator Steve Howe at 541-573-8614 or email outreach@wincahoots.com. Donations are accepted at any time and are 100 percent tax-deductible. Mail checks to CAN Cancer, c/o Harney District Hospital, 557 W Washington, Burns, OR 97720 or drop off at the HDH admitting desk.

Harney District Hospital and C&B Sanitary Services are working together in Harney County to give our residents assistance in their fight against cancer.

Every Dollar Stays Local

One hundred percent of all donations to the CAN Cancer fund at Harney District Hospital go directly toward local residents fighting cancer. This fund assists in paying for non-medical expenses that insurance or other programs don’t cover, such as gas and lodging. The only eligibility requirements are that you have cancer, live in Harney County and plan to receive cancer treatment.

How Can You ‘Pitch In’?

Cancer diagnosis can be a financial and emotional strain. Survivors agree that fighting the disease requires every ounce of their emotional and physical strength. Any financial assistance we can provide will lessen their burden. CAN Cancer relies on support from our local community to give our neighbors a fighting chance. Donations can be made to the CAN Cancer fund at Harney District Hospital using the “Donate” button below OR you can mail a check to CAN Cancer, c/o Harney District Hospital, 557 W Washington, Burns, OR 97720 or drop off at the HDH admitting desk.
